D.I.Y. June – July 2013

Now You Don’t… Now You Don't
After 2 years of trying to play pool in a room that was just too darn small, we gave up and decided to sell the billiard table… sorry Mike & George (our friends that loved the table)!!
That opened up a huge project for us and we are excited to get started on it.  We currently have our office in a small room with all oak furniture and my desk is (and has been for the last 2 years) a fold out 6’ table.  Our plan is to convert the formal living room, which is where we had the pool table, into our office.  To accomplish that here’s what we have to do…
The first thing we’ll do is close off this archway, which will give us more wall space and hide the smaller room.

Then we’ll tear out the carpet and replace it with tile that looks like wood.  Hank will run all the wiring for our office, as well as install a ceiling fan.  We will sell all that old oak furniture and buy new office furniture.  Then we’ll move the treadmill from the spare room into the small room which is currently our office and that will then be our workout room.  We’ll turn the spare room (where the treadmill is currently) into a second guest room.  So we’ll have to buy a bed and we’re going to make the headboard for it.  We saw a pattern for it and a friend made the headboard; we saw it in person and it’s awesome, so we’ll give it a try.  Here’s what it looks like.  We are very excited to start this new, and somewhat unexpected project.  Because of our crazy busy schedule for the next 2 months, we won’t be able to start it until September… so hang tight for lots of  D.I.Y. pictures!!

Our cabinets are FINALLY done!!!  I actually started working on them a few months ago little by little, but went into high gear in June. Open-mouthed smile  For those of you who have been to our house, you’ve seen the damage .  It certainly is not perfect, but it looks so much better now.  In fact, it looks better in person than the pictures depict.  The photos show every little bit of the blemishes, but in person they just look like shadows.
Here was my kit
Materials Used
We also added quarter rounds and decorative molding where the floor tile meets the cabinets and we did that throughout the house.  It made a huge difference and really dressed up the cabinets.  I applied pre-stain wood conditioner, stained, sanded, sealed with Minwax polyurethane spray varnish, sanded, more varnish, and sanded again.  That took a while to complete due to the drying process between applications.

Hank installed the molding with a brad gun attached to a compressor.  That made the job go very quickly and easy too.
Installing Trim
The damage was throughout the house, so I’m only showing a few of the BEFORE & AFTER pictures.
